The Grey Heron

The Grey Heron is a common waterside species. 

Bare facts ---

Length 94 cm  Wingspan 135 cm weight 1.5 kg.

Nest in tall trees a large nest of twigs and waterside plant debris. 

Eggs -3-4 first of two broods laid in early to mid March.

Incubation 27, 28 days  Incubated by both parents. The young spend 50-55 days in nest before they fledge.

Typical lifespan 2-5 years.  Breeding typically at two years.

Latin name Ardea herodias
